Both Konga and Jumia are both referred to as Online Marketplace because they operate as intermediary merchant sites that connect sellers and buyers. Konga and Jumia (both launched in 2012) are undoubtedly the two largest online marketplaces in Nigeria, as many more online retailers are listing their products on these platforms.

However, most online retailers (especially newbies) ask questions about which of Konga or Jumia is the best marketplace for sellers. In this article, we’ll be making comparison between Konga and Jumia, focusing on which is best for sellers. Commissions

When your item is successfully sold on Konga, you will be charged a commission fee based on the item sales value per category. This commission fee is a percentage of the selling value.  

Commission fees are as low as 3% on Konga, which you only pay when you successfully sell your product.  
On Jumia, you will only pay the commissions on each item you sell. The commission also depends on the category of your item.

Jumia commission charges range from 5% to 15%.

Verdict: It appears that the commission Konga charges is slightly lower than Jumia’s commission charges.

Self-fulfilling Orders

Konga allows sellers to deliver items on their own. As a seller, you are to fix your own shipping charge. Konga allows you to charge:
• Major cities within Lagos – ₦750
• Major cities outside Lagos – ₦1500
• Outskirt of Lagos – ₦3000  

The maximum amount that can be charged for shipping is ₦3000. But if you sell heavy items and the shipments above will not suffice, Konga allows you to customize your shipment charges.
Jumia does not allow sellers to deliver the items on their own. Jumia has a logistic team available to deliver items to customers.

Verdict: If you would like to make deliveries yourself, then Jumia will not be a good fit for you. On the other hand, if you would like to boycott self-delivery, you can choose either Konga or Jumia.

Fulfilment by Konga (FBK) vs Jumia Express

Through Fulfillment by Konga (FBK) and Konga Express, as a seller, you can store your products at their warehouses at a cost. When a customer places an order, they both pack and ship your products to the customer directly from their warehouses within the shortest possible time. However, they have a few differences:

Merchants will consequently be billed by the size (weight band) of the item being warehoused, billing ONLY occurs once an item has been successfully delivered.  

Merchants pay:
₦157.5 for 0 – 10kg
₦525 for 11 – 25kg
₦840 for above 25kg.
Jumia charges monthly per item stored. Sellers will pay ₦3 per item in the small size category, ₦8 per item in the medium size category, and ₦14 per item in the large size category.
Customers bear the cost of shipping charges. However, the seller bears the cost if the seller offers free shipping.Jumia charges merchants per item delivered:
₦300 per item delivered in the small size category
₦600 per item delivered in the medium size category
₦900 per item delivered in the large size category
₦100 per item delivered in the fashion category

Verdict: The choice between Fulfilment by Konga(FBK) and Jumia Express is dependent on seller’s preference and category of products.

Refund policy

Konga offers buyers a 7-day return window for items that meet the requirements for return. However, Konga puts a restriction on returning some items to protect the sellers:  

1. Products that have been altered from their original or opened by unauthorized personnel without permission.

2. Product with tampered or missing serial Universal Product Code numbers (UPC).

3. Perishable goods cannot be returned except a valid reason is raised at the point of delivery with affirmation from the dispatcher.

4. Products damaged due to misuse.

5. Products in the beauty, health, and personal care category.

6. Jewellery, innerwear, bedsheets, lingerie, and socks.

7. Books and CDs    
Jumia also has a return policy of 7 days, so customers can return the item for the following reasons within 7 Days:  

1. The product is not the one ordered

2. The product is faulty

3. Counterfeit Item

4.Customer changes their mind  

Jumia also ensures that when customers return an item, all seals, tags, and accessories are left intact and the item is in its original packaging.

Verdict: Konga and Jumia both have a refund policy that also protects the seller but it appears that Konga’s policy protects sellers a bit more.

Selling Requirements

To become a registered seller on Konga, you will be required to:

• Upload your profile picture on your SellerHQ profile page.

• Upload a scanned copy of your international passport OR driver’s license OR permanent voters card as proof of identification in the store documents section of your profile page

On completion of the orientation program, you will be verified upon the requirements below:

• Uploaded profile picture on your SellerHQ

• Submitted copy of a valid means of identification

• Profile picture on your submitted proof of identification and your SellerHQ profile must be a match.

• 80% score points in the orientation assessment
To become a registered seller on Jumia, you will be required to:  

Step 1: Fill the registration form. Don’t forget to read and accept our Seller Agreement.  

Step 2: Complete the dedicated training session for new sellers and become an e-commerce expert in minutes.  

Step 3: List more than five Products and start selling. Simple!

Verdict: They both have a similar registration process. However, Jumia’s registration requirements appear less demanding than Konga’s.
